Children are the most visible victims of malnourishment. Children who are poorly nourished suffer up to 160 days of illness each year.
Poor nutrition plays a role in at least half of the 10.9 million child deaths each year--five million deaths. Malnourishment magnifies the effect of every disease.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), 15.8 million children under 18 in the United States live in households where they are unable to consistently access enough nutritious food necessary for a healthy life.
Although nutritional deficiency is harmful to any individual, it can be particularly devastating among children due to their increased vulnerability and the potential for long-term consequences.
Outside of the U.S., more than 70% of malnourished children live in Asia, 26% in Africa and 4% in Latin America and the Caribbean.
In many cases, their plight began even before birth with a malnourished mother.
Nutritional deficiencies among pregnant women in developing countries leads to 1 out of 6 infants born with low birth weight. This is a risk factor for neonatal deaths, and also causes learning disabilities, mental retardation, poor health, blindness and premature death.
